Communiqué de presse du Parlement européen:
Statesmen and stars celebrate clean energy at EP Gala

A representative of Fronius receives the global award

A mixture of statesmen, actors and singers joined MEPs and a large audience for the annual Energy Globe Awards in the European Parliament on Monday night. Hosted by actress Désirée Nosbusch the event saw Alanis Morissette and Dionne Warwick perform songs old and new. Mikhail Gorbachev picked up a lifetime achievement award whilst Kofi Annan presented the water award.

As the event opened parliament's president Hans-Gert Pöttering spoke of the energy and environmental legislation currently going through the House. He told the audience that "the EU must take the leadership in the fight against climate change - it is our obligation to live at peace with our environment".

In picking up a special lifetime achievement award former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev received a standing ovation from the crowd. He thanked those present and urged collective action on climate change saying "we will never achieve our goals alone".

Air and water: "Earth for future generations"

The Air award went to Austria's "Fronius" company who pioneer CO2-free transport. It later picked up the global award voted by the audience. Presenting it president of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso urged Europe to embrace the environmental targets it had set itself to reach by 2020.

When presenting the water award to a drinking water projects in Mozambique former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan used an African proverb to stress the fragility of life. He told the hushed audience that "the earth is not ours its something we hold for future generations".

Fire and earth with Dionne Warwick and Aamir Khan

The Andasol solar power station in Spain and a rubbish-sorting project in Peru picked up the fire and earth prizes respectively. Legendary soul singer Dionne Warwick presented the fire award then treated the crowd to a rendition of "What the world needs now is love". Italian star Zucchero and Canadian singer Alanis Morissette also entertained the crowd.

An energy and sustainability programme that supports environmental learning in young people in South Africa picked up the "Youth" award. The last words should go to Bollywood actor Aamir Khan who struck a reflective note saying that people had to realise that earth is neither "a money making machine nor a rubbish dump".

Andasol solar power plant projects
WINNER

Applicant: Solar Millennium AG
Project: Andasol solar power plant projects
Country of implementation: Spain

Solar Millennium plans and builds solar-thermal power plants. The company initiated the Spanish parabolic trough power plants Andasol 1-3 and successfully completed the project developments. This marks the opening of the European market for solar power generation on the scale of large power plants with the potential of displacing fossil and nuclear power plants. furthermore, the Andasol power plants in many ways serve as role model projects. For more than 15 years no new parabolic trough power plants had been built. The installation of thermal storage enables the power plants to produce electricity in a planable way, including nights, which opens new perspectives for solar power generation. The Andasol projects also serve as the world’s largest installation for utilizing solar energy. Each of the power plants supplies up to 200,000 people with solar energy.

Communiqué de presse SOLEL:

Solel Closes Deal with Ibereolica for 190,000 Solar Receivers Second major contract in Spanish market in one month; combined value of over $250 million Bet Shemesh, Israel (May 20, 2008) -- Solel Solar Systems, Ltd. announced today its largest single sale of solar receiver technology – a contract to supply Ibereólica Solar, S.L of Madrid, a leading Spanish parabolic trough solar thermal plant developer, with more than 190,000 UVAC 2008 receiver systems. The receivers will power eight 50MW solar power plants Ibereolica is developing in southern Spain. Delivery of the receivers to Ibereolica will commence in 2009. This is Solel's second large contract for solar receivers this month, with a combined contract value of over $250 million. Two weeks ago, Solel announced a contract with a Spanish consortium, whose name was not released, for approximately 70,000 receivers. Solel also recently announced its plans to construct in Andalusia a manufacturing facility for solar field components. The UVAC 2008 provides solar power plant developers, such as Ibereolica, the most advanced commercially tested technology for capturing sunlight and converting it to heat for clean power generation. Ibereolica's plants will include thermal heat storage so the heat from the solar receivers can be converted to electricity during evening hours. "We are extremely proud of this very significant deal with Ibereolica, one of Spain's elite developers of clean energy," said Avi Brenmiller, President and CEO of Solel Solar Systems. "A growing number of renewable energy providers, in Spain and around the world, are choosing Solel's solar thermal technology because it is the best way to create maximum power from available sunshine." About Solel Solar Systems Ltd. Solel is the leader in utility scale solar thermal technologies, providing the solar "fuel" for producing clean electricity. The Solel parabolic trough technology has proven itself commercially over two decades with the continuous production of 354 MW of utility scale power, helping California consumers reduce their annual oil consumption by two million barrels. In addition, Solel provides the key technology for new solar power plants in the U.S. and Spain. Solel's headquarters, manufacturing plant and R&D center are in Beit Shemesh, Israel, and it operates in the U.S. through its subsidiary, Solel USA. In Spain, Solel operates
through its subsidiary, Solel Spain, and is represented for sales by Pasch Y CIA. For more information please visit: www.solel.com.

About Ibereolica

Ibereólica Solar, S.L is a leading Spanish parabolic trough thermosolar power plant developer. Currently, they are developing 1000 MW of thermosolar plants in Spain, in the Autonomous Regions of Extremadura, Andalucia, Castilla_La Mancha and Castilla y León. Ibereolica foresees the end of construction for their first eight thermosolar power plants (400 MW) by mid 2011.

Al Gore, conférence annuelle de Ness Technologies, Tel Aviv, 20 mai 2008 :

" (...) The know-how and the technology are available, and all that remains is for us to unite and act. It's necessary to understand, for example, that the solar energy that falls on the earth every 40 minutes meets the energy needs of the earth's entire population for more than a year (...)
I know that Israel has widespread use of solar water heaters, and it should to the same degree switch to energy production by photovoltaic cells or thermosolar energy. I'd warmly recommend and I invest in these issues of energy production. There are technologies that direct solar rays to a tower, and generate power that is competitive to conventional power (...) Israel has sun-drenched desert areas. You should focus on solar energy production not only for Israel's needs, but also for export."

"It is a revolutionary idea to use the af
fluent sun energy especially in the deserts of Africa and Arabia for the production of clean energy, that can alsobe transported to developed countries in the North. A new development paradigm would  be the consequence for Africa on the one side and for the climate targets in Europe on the other side. This is what makes DESERTEC fascinating" - Klaus Töpfer, Directeur du programme des Nations-Unies pour l'environnement - Trecers.net, Novembre 2007.
