- Un arbre à croissance rapide, fixateur d'azote, résistant à la sécheresse, qui pousse en plein soleil, sur des sols difficiles, même sur des sols salés.
- Précipitations : 500 à 2500mm - T°C : 0 à 50°C...
- Rendement : Minimum 5 tonnes de graines par hectare et par an - Contenu en huile des graines
: 30 à 40% d'huile.
Pongamia pinnata (ou Karanj) est un arbre de la famille des Fabacées à croissance rapide, fixateur d'azote, très résistant à la sécheresse, qui pousse en plein soleil, sur des sols difficiles, même sur des sols salés, et producteur d'huile. Température maximale supportée : de 27 à 38°C
L'Inde encourage actuellement fortement la plantation de cet arbre ainsi que de l'arbusteJatropha curcas dans les zones impropres aux cultures traditionnelles, ceci dans l'optique de produire de l'huile végétale.
Des programmes de plantation de cet arbre ont également été lancés en Ouganda et au Cameroun (dans la région de Kumbo), à l'initiative de l' Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy. Cet arbre a un fort potentiel pour lutter contre la désertification, notamment en zone sahélienne.
On peut planter 200 arbres par hectare et chaque arbre permet de produire dès la 5ème année de 25 à 40 kg de fruits dont la teneur en huile est de 30 à 35%. Une personne peut récolter chaque jour (8 heures de travail) 180kg de fruit. Les rendements moyens en huile sont de 1,7 tonnes/ha/an la dizième année, ce qui est excellent ! (une tonne la 5ème année). - + 5,3 tonnes de cakes qui peuvent alimenter une unité de biométhanisation...

Introduction
Self reliance in energy is vital for overall economic development of our country. The need to search for alternative sources of energy which are renewable, safe & non polluting assumes top priority in view of the uncertain supplies & frequent price hikes of fossil fuels in the international market. Among the many species, which can yield oil as a source of energy in the form of biodiesel, Pongamia pinnata has been found to be one of the most suitable species due to its various favourable attributes like its hardy nature, high oil recovery and quality of oil, etc. It can be planted on degraded lands through Joint Forest Management (JFM), farmer’s field boundaries, Wastelands / fallow lands.
Indigenous production of Pongamia oil will save foreign exchange worth of several million dollars & also generate employment opportunities in rural areas.
NABARD, as an apex institution with regard to policy, planning and operation in the field of agriculture and rural credit, is actively involved in extending credit support for renewable energy development in rural areas along with other financial institutions.
